Business Name Search & Registration
In this section we will review:
-
How to determine the type of Business you want to have,
-
Selecting a Business Name,
-
Searching a Business Name,
-
and Registering Your Approved Business Name.
Decide on Business Type
Most practitioners starting up are sole proprietorship or partnerships. The BC Registries has a "Business Structure Wizard" to help you decide if you are not sure which category you may fall under. The link for the "Business Structure Wizard" is:

BC Business Name Search
The BC Registries has a search engine that allows you to search out business names before applying to have them as your own.

Step 1 - Select "For Businesses That Do Not Exist Yet" and pull down the drop down menu

Step 2 - Select "Start a New BC Based Business"

Next you need to tell the BC Registries Online Registration engine, the type of business you would like to register.

Step 3 - Select "Business Type" from the next field's drop down menu. For most this will be "proprietorship".

Step 4 - Enter your FIRST choice for your preferred business name in the next field. In this example we are using "Joe's Flea Market".

Step 5 - Click "Check This Name"

Step 6 - Review your results. In this example there is a Warning that there are 6 similar names. This is your opportunity to search out similar names and change your preferred chosen name if already taken by someone in BC. If it is taken, it is not available for you to use.

Step 7 - Review the search results. In this example we are using "Joe's Flea Market" and there are several similar, but not exactly the same as our example request of "Joe's Flea Market". There is a really good chance this example would be approved as it is different from the rest. However, it is up to the discretion of the BC Registries staff.

Business Name Request Submission
Once you have decided if you want to proceed with the first chosen name (or you can go back and search other names to see if they are available), you will be taken to the Business Name Request Submission Form.

Step 8 - Fill in your first name choice; then your second name choice (in case the first choice is declined), and your third name choice.

BC Registries searches names in order 1, 2, 3. If the first choice is available, they DO NOT continue searching the other submitted names. It is PARAMOUNT that you ensure you first choice name is first; your second choice name is second, and your third choice is third.

Step 9 - Complete the online Name Request form with all your contact details.

NOTE: There are two screens with your details to be completed in this section

Step 10 - Once both pages are completed. Click on the "Review and Confirm" Button at the bottom.

Confirm and Pay for Name Request Submission
Step 11 - Review the confirmation form information. If anything is wrong, you can cancel and go back and correct any information.
The fee for a name search is $31.50 Canadian. Once you hit "Continue to Payment" you will be taken to a payment portal where you can use your credit card to pay for the search fee.

Once submitted it usually takes 6 - 7 business days to receive a confirmation in your email. This DOES NOT mean you have REGISTERED your business. It only means you have secured the preferred name for a short time in order to give you time to register your business name.

Registering Your Business Once Your Business Name is Approved
Once you have received a confirmation email of the approved business name, you are ready to register your business through the BC Registries.
Step 12 - Set Up BC Registries Account
In order to do this you need to set up a BC Registries account. The easiest way is by using your BC Services Card app to pair with the computer/tablet you are on.
If you already have one, you can just log in. If you do not have one, select the way you would like to log in and the system will walk you through setting up a BC Registries Account.

Step 14 - Read through the "Terms and Conditions".
Click "Accept" to continue.

Step 15 - Complete Your Registration
The BC Registries system will walk you through the registration process, including applying for a GST number if needed (only if clearing $30k/year), WCB (you can sign up for personal insurance as a proprietor), City Licensing (although in my experience, you still have to go to the City Works Yard.

You will receive your provincial BC Business Registration Number upon completion of your registration.
